Inside Mig the Pig
Flip-the-page Format: 'Mig the Pig' is a unique split page book; as each page turns a different consonant (onset) is introduced, creating a new word with the same short vowel sound (rime) - i.e. Mig, Pig, Big, Wig, Gig. Please note that only the first three pages of the story are shown here, along with the final spread, in order to demonstrate the changing onset and constant rime. Click above to see how the split page format works.
Rhyming Narrative: 'Mig the Pig' is written in a rhyming text in order to help children understand word formation. The large key word with its changing consonants encourages vocal repetition of the short vowel sound 'i'.
Characters & Speech bubbles: In this story, Mig the pig goes out riding in her gig wearing her bright red wig. Word formation is additionally helped by two cheeky bookworms who, with the use of speech bubbles comment on the characters and story as it progresses. In understanding the structure of language, speech bubbles are recognized as an important learning device for children in the building of narrative skills.
